One Day Golden Monkey Trekking Experience in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Our unforgettable Golden Monkey trekking experience in Rwanda began early in the morning. At 4:30 AM, we departed from Kigali to Musanze, excited for a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife adventure in Volcanoes National Park.

By 7:00 AM, we arrived at RDB Kinigi Headquarters for registration. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, filled with travelers from different countries who had come to explore Rwanda’s famous wildlife experiences. After registration, we enjoyed a warm cup of coffee while networking with fellow tourists. Soon after, professional park guides organized visitors into groups based on their booked activities — Gorilla Trekking, Volcano Hiking, and Golden Monkey Trekking, which was our choice for the day.

Following a detailed briefing on safety and conservation, we boarded our vehicle and drove toward the Golden Monkey trekking starting point. Upon arrival at the parking area, we stepped out of the car, picked up our hiking sticks, and began the walk toward the forest. The trail passed through scenic potato plantations, offering beautiful views of the countryside at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes. The path was muddy, with morning dew still covering the ground, making the walk feel adventurous and authentic. It took us about 30 minutes to reach the edge of the forest.

As we entered the bamboo forest, we were warmly welcomed by armed park rangers who ensure the safety of both visitors and wildlife. They provided clear instructions on the dos and don’ts during the trek. To protect ourselves and the Golden Monkeys, everyone wore face masks, highlighting Rwanda’s strong commitment to eco-tourism and wildlife conservation.

Soon after, we began tracking the Golden Monkeys inside the dense bamboo forest. These playful primates live in organized groups led by a dominant family leader who guides the others. Watching them move gracefully through the bamboo, feeding on herbs and bamboo shoots, was truly fascinating. We spent one magical hour observing their behavior, taking photos, and appreciating the beauty of nature in its purest form.

After the trek, we returned to the parking area and headed back to Musanze City, where we enjoyed a well-deserved lunch. In the afternoon, we began our journey back to Kigali, carrying unforgettable memories of the day.

This Golden Monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park was an incredible experience — from the scenic landscapes and fresh mountain air to the close encounter with Rwanda’s unique wildlife. Standing beneath the volcanoes and watching the Golden Monkeys in their natural habitat was truly inspiring. Inspired by this adventure, I am already planning my next visit — Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

If you are looking for a one-day wildlife experience from Kigali, Golden Monkey trekking is a perfect choice, combining adventure, nature, and conservation in one unforgettable journey.
